House Cleaning Services Under the NDIS: What Is It?

Do you find it challenging to perform essential housekeeping chores because of your disability? No need to stress over it because under the Core supports budget, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has a category called “Assistance with daily life”. This category can cover funding for house cleaning services. House cleaning can include the following essential household tasks:

  • Vacuuming and mopping floors
  • Dusting and wiping surfaces
  • Cleaning kitchen fixtures including sinks, faucets, countertops, microwaves and other kitchen appliances
  • Bathroom cleaning including toilets, shower area, sinks, and bath tubs.

Am I Eligible for NDIS Home Cleaning Services?

The NDIS will decide to fund home cleaning services for you based on your circumstances.

If you cannot perform house cleaning tasks because of your disability and your housekeeping needs are considered “reasonable and necessary”, the NDIS can fund support services for it.

However, the NDIS will not cover the costs of professional trade services such as interior design, electrical services, and plumbing.

Things to Consider Before Getting Help With House Cleaning

Once you find out that you are eligible and have your budget set, it is important to know what your needs really are before hiring a cleaning company. Consider the following points and jot them done:

  • Chores that you can do yourself
  • Chores that you need someone else to do
  • How often do you need a cleaner to clean your home
  • Will your budget be enough for your needs

Tips for Choosing a Service Provider to Clean Your Home

There are numerous service providers that offer house cleaning services. Each offers a different package so it is important to screen them to find out if they are the right service provider for you.

  • Show them the list of tasks you need help with and if they can do all of those for you.
  • Check if they supply and bring their own cleaning equipment.
  • See if their availability matches yours.
  • Check reviews of previous clients.
  • Make sure that you understand the Service Agreement and fits your needs.

What if I Want to Learn or Improve My Housekeeping Skills?

If your NDIS goal is to be more independent with daily tasks such as cleaning your own house, the NDIS can still help you with that.

For participants who wish to learn or improve their skills to live an independent life as possible, funding for support will come from the Capacity Building budget.

If you want to learn to do specific chores yourself and get a cleaner for the tasks that you can’t do, that’s also possible. Just be sure to be clear on your goals in your NDIS Plan to make sure you get the funding you need in the right NDIS budget categories.
